What is the SAT?
The SAT or Scholastic Assessment Test is a college admissions exam given seven times a year. There are currently three sections: writing, critical reading and math. The SAT takes three hours and 45 minutes. Most students take the SAT during the winter/spring of their junior year, saving the fall of their senior year for retesting, if necessary.
You will receive three scores on the SAT, one writing, one critical reading, one math. Each subject is scored on a scale of 200-800 points. Combine the three scores for a total SAT score. The national average is about 1525. You will also receive your essay score separately.

What is the PSAT?
The PSAT is the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test. It is a two hour test given once a year in October. There are five separate sections: two math sections, two verbal sections, and one writing skills section. Each subject is scored on a scale from 20 to 80 points for a total of 240 maximum points. National Merit Scholarship semifinalists are selected based on the PSAT score.
Most high school students take the PSAT during their junior year, however, many schools now allow sophomores to take the test for practice.
